NieuWater and partners developed a treatment plant for the production of ultrapure water from WWTP effluent, almost without using chemicals.

We developed and designed the process (“Pure water factory”), combining existing and innovative techniques: Ultra Filtration, Biological Active Carbon for biofouling prevention on RO, Reverse Osmosis (RO, double pass)  and Electro-De-Ionisation (EDI).  

Special sensors were developed to monitor scaling and biofouling. The pure water is used for the production of high pressure steam for infiltration into an oil field. Due to the high quality of the water (mean conductivity of 0.067 µS/cm) there is no need for draining off the boilers and no discharge of chemical waste.

Results:

  • Reliable, almost chemical free process for ultrapure water production from WWTP effluent
  • Very low waste.
