Introduction

Pumps and related mechanical and electrical technologies such as mixers and blowers form the heart of post-use water treatment plants and any pumping stations in the wider sewer network. They play an essential role in moving used water to and through the treatment process, moving liquid sludges, and delivering the aeration needed in most treatment processes. They play the same role in industrial water treatment systems.

These technologies have to be able to cope with the harsh operating conditions of used water. Operators want solutions where regular maintenance requirements are minimised and unplanned repairs are avoided as far as possible. The power requirements of pumping and other mechanical and electrical equipment is also coming under increasing scrutiny. This is because of both the cost of electricity and the growing need to reduce power consumption in order to limit greenhouse gas emissions. This means operators also need efficiency in the technologies they use.
