Dutch Water Technology

Harvesting seawater

A growing number of countries around the world have turned to the sea as a source of water. Regions such as the Middle East in particular have applied technology to remove salt and create fresh supplies. These include use of distillation and reverse osmosis treatment.

Our niche

Dutch technology and expertise contribute to this potential to exploit seawater. This includes, for example, the development of innovative membranes able to help reduce the energy demands associated with desalination. One of the biggest problems associated with desalination is the impact that the brine produced has when returned to the environment. Exciting developments in technology include opportunities to achieve zero liquid discharge. Dutch expertise also contributes to progress with other opportunities around seawater, such as the use of seawater to flush toilets and so reduce demand on fresh sources.
