Water efficiency programmes for consumers

Introduction

Residential water use is of great importance in the sustainable water resource picture. This is particularly so because of the demand for high quality drinking water, which is likely to be sourced from the best quality water resources. Local pressures on water resources are growing because of the continued movement of people to urban areas. Rising affluence tends to bring with it greater water use. Even in mature developed countries, the growing number of single occupancy homes adds to this pressure. Water efficiency programmes aimed at residential consumers are a way to counteract this trend. Municipal water suppliers have a crucial role to play in this respect.
